FDA updates list of hand sanitizers to avoid

Updated: Mar 16, 2023

The FDA is again cautioning consumers about certain hand sanitizers being sold in the market - ones that are not potent enough or may even be poisonous.

Some of these products do not contain high enough levels of ethanol (alternatively called ethyl alcohol) to be effective. Sixty percent ethanol is the minimum recommendation, per the CDC. Other sanitizers are or may be contaminated with methanol, which is toxic when absorbed through the skin and even more dangerous if ingested.
