Updated: Mar 16, 2023

The FDA has issued an import alert on all alcohol-based hand sanitizers imported from Mexico in an effort to stop potentially dangerous or subpotent hand sanitizer products from entering the US market. This move means shipments of hand sanitizer products will be subject to increased scrutiny and may be detained until the the products' safety can be reviewed.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the FDA has seen a continual increase in unsafe hand sanitizers coming from Mexico. Analyses of alcohol-based hand sanitizers imported from Mexico during April through December 2020 found that 84% of the samples analyzed were not in compliance with FDA regulations. More than half of the samples were found to contain toxic ingredients, including methanol and/or 1-propanol, at dangerous levels.
